HOUSTON ( KIAH ) — The search for an inmate who escaped the Harris County Jail Complex has ended with his capture on Tuesday. Travis Bryant II turned himself in to Harris County deputies a week after escaping from the Harris County Joint Processing Center releasing area last Tuesday around 1 p.m.

A 78-year-old criminal defense attorney accused of smuggling drug-laced documents to inmates in Harris County Jail died from natural causes in January, his attorney told the Houston Chronicle. Charges filed in 2023 against Ronald Lewis,

One of the prisoners died after being transferred to a private prison in Louisiana, an ongoing practice used to address chronic overcrowding within the downtown Houston jail.

The late defense attorney's charges were dropped after being accused of smuggling drug-laced papers into the Harris County Jail.
